TBR Weekly Preview: March 18-22

In addition to this week’s vendor analysis, TBR Senior Analyst John Caucis will host a webinar Wednesday, March 20, sharing his insights on the state of the healthcare IT services market and the 2019 HIMSS mega-event. 

Furthermore, TBR analysts will be attending several events this week, so be on the lookout for special reports on Accenture, SAP and Oracle as early as next week.

Monday

  • Despite its top-tier innovation and optimistic messaging, Oracle struggles to find incremental growth outside its cloud ERP portfolio. While traction around autonomous database builds, these ERP inroads present an opportunity for Oracle to more effectively craft a story across its integrated cloud applications and platform capabilities. TBR’s initial findings can be accessed today, but read more on the subject in our 1Q19 Oracle Cloud full report publishing in April. (Meaghan McGrath leads TBR’s analysis of Oracle.)

Wednesday

  • HP Inc. delivered corporate growth of 1.3% year-to-year, a significant slowdown after five quarters of double-digit growth. During the company’s 4Q18 earnings call, executives discussed challenges within HP Inc.’s profitable print supplies business, but slowed growth in its commercial printing and overall PC businesses indicates the problem is broader. Slowing consolidation opportunities and rising opposition from its peers in the PC market will increasingly challenge HP Inc., whose PC business composes most of its top line. In addition, the CPU shortage has been more impactful to HP Inc.’s wider portfolio. Read our full report to find how HP Inc. will navigate these challenges throughout 2019, including growing its Device as a Service portfolio and supporting its sales channels to build a bulwark for upcoming PC share wars. Thursday

  • According to TBR estimates, Dell Technologies achieved $23.8 billion in revenue, up 8.6% year-to-year in 4Q18. Gross profit increased 20.7% year-to-year, highlighting Dell Technologies’ successful improvement in overall profitability. In TBR’s 4Q18 full report on the company, we will dive into the performance of key business units. Within Infrastructure Solutions Group (ISG), TBR believes aggressive market share expansion in both servers and storage will be a key focus for at least the first half of 2019, which will result in investments in direct sales, ISG’s channel partner program and portfolio enhancements. In Client Solutions Group, Dell Technologies will continue to benefit from shrinking memory prices as well as the CPU shortages, which will drive profitability up during 2019. From a corporate perspective, 2019 will see tightened integration between the vendor’s strategically aligned companies. (See Stephanie Long for more analysis.)
  • In this quarter’s analysis of Dell EMC Services, TBR will highlight how Dell Technologies integrating preconfigured services solutions around core infrastructure technology competencies enables Dell EMC Services to attach profitable and recurring services revenue streams. (Kevin Collupy leads TBR’s analysis of Dell EMC Services.)
  • In 4Q18 Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) reported corporate revenue of $7.6 billion, down 1.6% year-to-year. TBR estimates total cloud revenue reached $1.9 billion, up 3.1% year-to-year, as HPE continued to invest in its cloud portfolio and capitalize on customer demand for hybrid IT solutions. HPE’s leaner business and ongoing restructuring efforts through HPE Next allow HPE Cloud to focus on and invest further in its core areas of strength, namely hybrid infrastructure and edge computing for IoT and telecommunications use cases.   • VMware’s top-line growth continues to outpace that of its software peers in TBR’s Infrastructure Management Software Vendor Benchmark. In 4Q18 VMware experienced its strongest quarter since 3Q14, with revenue growth of 16.4% year-to-year to $2.6. Revenue growth was buoyed by strong adoption across VMware’s emerging product lines, with vSAN revenue growing 60% year-to-year and Hybrid Cloud and SaaS revenue growing 35% in the same time period. Further, the company is successfully packaging solutions around hybrid management to increase deal sizes and reported a company-record 23 deals in excess of $10 million during the quarter.   • Huawei is taking a prominent role in setting standards for 5G and launching solutions to help operators implement 5G services, which has led to key early commercial 5G-related contracts in EMEA and APAC. While security concerns around 5G will persist, Huawei will continue to grow revenue in 2019 largely due to its Consumer and Enterprise business units, which are taking share from incumbents.(Michael Soper leads TBR’s coverage of Huawei.)

Friday

  • According to TBR’s 1Q19 Telecom IoT Market Landscape, TBR estimates global communication service provider (CSP) IoT revenue rose 25.6% year-to-year to $22.3 billion in 2018. Despite sustaining strong revenue growth, TBR estimates global CSP IoT revenue accounted for only 1% of consolidated global CSP revenue in 2018, which is insufficient for most service providers to offset erosion within challenged segments such as legacy network services. To maximize IoT revenue opportunities long term, CSPs are focusing on attracting customers by implementing more cost-efficient network technologies such as NB-IoT and LTE-M, targeting high-value contracts in areas such as smart cities and healthcare, and by positioning to support next-generation IoT solutions integrating technologies such as 5G and edge computing. TBR Weekly Preview: March 4-8

As we start winding down beginning-of-the-year earnings calls, here’s what you can expect from the TBR team this week:

Tuesday:

  • In 3Q18 TBR noted Salesforce built on its industry-specific strategies by releasing Financial Services Cloud for retail banking and by expanding its target audience for Education Cloud. Salesforce’s ongoing innovation to address vertical use cases and ability to understand customers’ business needs enabled the vendor to execute multiproduct deals in 4Q18. TBR expects Salesforce will close 4Q18 with $12.2 billion in annual revenue, keeping the vendor on track to attain its $21 billion to $23 billion annual revenue goal in 2021. (See Jack McElwee for more analysis.)
  • Google Cloud’s hiring of Thomas Kurian as CEO (replacing Diane Greene) is meant to attract enterprise customers and facilitate stronger competition at scale with Amazon Web Services and Microsoft; Kurian, former Oracle president of Product Development, brings deep understanding and detailed messaging on the technical and business impacts of cloud. TBR’s 4Q18 report will detail Google Cloud’s continued innovation among its core AI and ML portfolios while partnering and leveraging Kurian’s clout to gain enterprise mindshare, which will be increasingly critical to long-term success. Thursday:

  • Cisco continues to grow revenue as it transforms itself through acquisitions, divestments and new product releases that enable the company to reduce its reliance on hardware — a commoditizing market — and embrace software. TBR’s 4Q18 Cisco report will include deep dives on Cisco’s most recent acquisitions, including Luxtera, which will help Cisco attract more webscale spend and improve the performance of its proprietary-based solutions, as well as Ensoft and Singularity Networks, which will broaden Cisco’s software capabilities in the service provider space. (Mike Soper leads TBR’s analysis on Cisco.)
  • TBR will also report on Cisco Services and the company’s expansion around software and next-generation solutions, which has created advisory and implementation opportunities that enabled Cisco Services to accelerate growth in 2018. An increase in software-related services as well as adoption of next-generation secure and intelligent platforms and products that support clients’ digital business will create attached services opportunities for Cisco Services, driving revenue expansion throughout 2019.   • TBR’s latest report on Perspecta will provide an update on how the fledgling company is managing the task of integrating three legacy organizations into a unified whole. In past reports, we have talked about how the company’s innovation incubator, Perspecta Labs, underpins its long-term position in the federal services landscape. Our 4Q18 Perspecta report will dive more deeply into how the company introduces Perspecta Labs to its biggest client, the U.S. Navy, in advance of the recompete of Perspecta’s largest contract, which entails managing the Navy Next Generation Enterprise Network. (Joey Cresta heads up TBR’s Public Sector practice.)
  • As reported in our initial response, NetApp earned $1.6 billion in revenue in 4Q18, representing a 1.6% year-to-year increase. Strong 1H18 revenue momentum enabled the vendor to achieve solid year-to-year revenue growth for 2018, demonstrating the success of some of NetApp’s strategic moves during the year. Our full report will dive into the 2018 establishment of a cloud infrastructure business unit that will enable NetApp to pivot its portfolio further in 2019, as the company, one of the few major pure play storage vendors left in the market, transforms itself to establish its brand as one that enables customers’ digital transformations. Friday:

  • Utilizing its technology expertise and ability to address clients’ business challenges, Capgemini reached its 2018 revenue growth and profitability goals and is confidently moving into 2019. Capgemini’s bookings reached their highest level since 1Q17 in 4Q18. In the latest full report, TBR will note how the increase in bookings, combined with Capgemini’s unified go-to-market approach; enhanced offerings around digital, cloud and industry-specific solutions; and reinforced expertise via training and reskilling, will enable the company to sustain revenue growth. Interoperability, consumerism and patient engagement remain perennial health IT imperatives

Following a handful of activities that took place during the preceding weekend, including the CIO Forum opening reception, HIMSS 2019 officially kicked off on Feb. 11. Nashville, Tenn.-based Change Healthcare, a 15,000-employee provider of revenue cycle management and clinical data exchange solutions, made headlines immediately with the announcement it will launch a new solution on Amazon Web Services (AWS) to provide “free clinical data interoperability services.” The collaboration with AWS will improve patients’ access to their medical information while enhancing the integration of patient and clinician platforms with EHR systems. There is never a shortage of cutting-edge and innovative health IT technologies showcased at the HIMSS conference, but Change Healthcare’s new offering, and its well-timed introduction, reflects the efforts companies are making amid the persistent challenges of interoperability and consumer-centrism in healthcare IT.

During HIMSS19 TBR spoke with healthcare IT professionals from hardware, software and services vendors; management consultancies; and professional services organizations possessing a bird’s eye view of current market trends and the strategic levers healthcare organizations are pulling to align with market movements and meet evolving demand for value-, data- and patient-centric health IT solutions.

Interoperability is a still a big problem that remains to be solved

Illustrating interoperability as a common and protracted concern among health IT professionals, conference organizers described the HIMSS Interoperability Showcase as “the most trafficked area of the exhibition floor.” There, attendees found demonstration areas where as many as eight health IT vendors could cooperate to showcase use cases for interoperability solutions. Beyond the exhibitions, interoperability-related panel discussions and presentations touched on how the recent Carequality and CommonWell alliances have created a national infrastructure, or informal backbone, of sorts to support and enhance interoperability across disparate health IT systems. The topic of open APIs received significant attention, as did how open source collaborations can help drive the industry toward a more interoperable future.

 

 

HIMSS 2019 hosted over 45,000 attendees and more than 1,300 vendors and featured more than 300 education sessions. Due to the massive scale of this industry conference, TBR elected to focus on seminars, round table discussions and exhibitions that emphasized interoperability, consumerism and patient engagement.

Services Weekly Preview: January 14-18

As the first quarter of the new year gets rolling, TBR’s Services team will be reporting on IT services vendors’ 4Q18 earnings, evaluating their performance and strategies, and pulling through trends across the entire IT services space.

Here’s what’s you can expect this week:

Wednesday: 

  • In 3Q18 we estimated Accenture’s revenue would expand 9.6% year-to-year in 4Q18 due to Accenture’s ability to convert bookings to cash and established delivery frameworks. Seasonal softness and headwinds among Financial Services clients in Europe and U.S. Federal caused bookings to decelerate and consulting book-to-bill ratio to drop under 1, at 0.99, for the first time since 3Q15. Accenture reported revenue growth of 7.3% year-to-year in 4Q18 due to some of these headwinds. However, we expect Accenture’s ability to execute on its consulting-to-operations approach will help it gain traction and expand wallet share among its 182 Diamond clients, including the 13 clients it gained in FY18.
  • In our Accenture Healthcare IT Services report, we note Accenture’s M&A ambitions in the healthcare sector seem to have cooled. Accenture finished 2018 without making a major healthcare-related acquisition, despite large companies, both inside and outside the technology services sector, leveraging M&A to enter the digital healthcare space and accelerate investment in healthcare IT innovation. While a continued robust volume of M&A activity in healthcare IT is expected in 2019 and will only serve to further inflate the valuation of healthcare IT acquisition targets, Accenture’s fiscal health surpasses most competitors’ and it could compete vigorously for these acquisitions. Because Accenture is focused on using M&A to enhance nonhealthcare-related growth initiatives, high-quality healthcare IT and consulting assets are falling into the hands of competitors with aggressive M&A strategies. TBR expects Accenture will stop allowing peers (especially smaller peers) to snatch up high-quality assets, IP and capabilities and will narrow the healthcare IT capabilities gap, as it has done in the digital market space.

Friday: In 3Q18 we estimated Wipro IT Services’ (ITS) revenue would remain flat from the year-ago quarter as weaknesses in core services and solutions offset expansions in the company’s digital business. Wipro ITS’ ability to upsell its clients helped extract additional wallet share from its top five clients; however, the company faces pressure in client retention, as its total number of active clients dropped during 3Q18. We expect these challenges combined with the elimination of Wipro ITS’ data center hosting business will have negatively impacted revenue performance during 4Q18.

Last week TBR rolled out its initial assessment of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). In 3Q18, based on TCS’ historical conservatism regarding acquisitions, TBR predicted TCS would likely remain quiet on the M&A front in 4Q18: The company “has demonstrated a strong preference for expanding its portfolio and global delivery resources organically rather than through M&A.” Over the last two years (driven by the digital wave), we have observed TCS earmarking free cash flow and investment capital to internal R&D and co-innovation with clients at regional innovation hubs rather than making acquisitions (unlike more acquisitive peers, such as Accenture and Cognizant). However, TCS surprised us with not one but two acquisitions in November: BridgePoint Group (financial services consulting) and W12 Studios (digital and creative design). Given TCS’ four-year hiatus from M&A and that these acquisitions are small-scale and will not impact TCS’ revenue substantially (TBR estimates they will contribute only $10 million to $20 million in new organic revenue annually, compared to TCS’ $20 billion in sales expected in FY19), we do not expect TCS to acquire again until these new assets are fully and successfully integrated. Given TCS’ four-year hiatus from M&A, and even though these acquisitions are small-scale and will not substantially move the revenue needle for TCS (we estimate both companies will only contribute between $10 million and $12 million in new inorganic revenue on an annual basis – TCS will generate over $20 billion in sales in its fiscal 2019), we expect TCS will not make further acquisitions until the newly acquired assets are fully and successfully integrated.  We believe this quiet period could end, however, by 2H19, as TCS is compelled to shed its traditional aversion to inorganic growth to keep from losing more addressable market to peers such as Accenture, which has acquired its way to the top of the digital marketing space. DXC Technology lands award in the Middle East, highlighting long-standing core strengths of its solution suite for the health payer sector

In 2016 United Arab Emirates (UAE)-based insurer United Insurance Co. (UIC) hired a new CIO and tasked him with digitally transforming the company’s IT infrastructure and operations to a cloud-based infrastructure (see below for a snapshot of UIC). Within the CIO’s first five months, UIC migrated its core IT applications (e.g., Office 365) to the Microsoft Azure cloud. The initial digitization of UIC’s IT foundation was successful, and the insurer then proceeded to seek out systems integration vendors capable of fully deploying its core insurance applications, additional elements of its IT infrastructure, and other workloads to the cloud.

UIC eventually selected DXC Technology (DXC), citing DXC’s wide range of insurance-centric platforms, products and services as key differentiators that made DXC the optimal choice. UIC also noted DXC’s insurance solutions have been developed and used in the insurance market for several decades, including in many different geographies, further emphasizing how the breadth and depth of DXC’s insurance sector expertise are deeply woven into its industry platforms and make it a compelling choice for insurers seeking digital transformation. UIC chose Integral, DXC’s open standards-based, end-to-end insurance solution spanning the entire insurance life cycle, and was able to quickly deploy core functions to the cloud, including customer and agent administration, proposal capture, claims and policy processing, and accounting. DXC’s Integral Life application has already been deployed, and in 2Q18 UIC announced that DXC’s Integral Health solution will soon go live.

In TBR’s view, DXC offers payer clients a robust suite of solutions developed over a long tenure serving the insurance sector, but despite strong insurance sector offerings DXC does not appear to be replicating the success with UIC with other insurance clients in its core U.S. market. While global payer IT spend is accelerating as insurers digitize operations to enhance connections with policyholders and increase customer loyalty, DXC risks losing out to competitors with similar scale and experience in the insurance IT sector if it fails to stabilize operations in its central markets.

 

 

UIC is a Dubai, UAE-based insurer established in 1998. UIC provides retail and commercial insurance products in areas including life, health, automotive, property, engineering, liability and marine to commercial enterprises and government entities in the UAE and the Middle East. UIC saw digital transformation as critical to its ability to differentiate in a highly competitive insurance market while ensuring that the company was prepared for the inevitable industry embrace of digital insurance.

As we wrap up the quarter, just a few key items are left including the four reports listed below, the Management Consulting Benchmark and predictions for 2019.

Here’s what’s coming this week:

Thursday: Our semiannual deep dive on DXC Technology’s healthcare IT services (HITS) practice includes our assessment that DXC’s long-awaited return to HITS growth remains elusive in the face of stubborn post-merger disruptions and poor contract performance. However, we had expected the company’s recent traction in APAC and select European markets would work in concert with rebounding IT spending patterns in the U.S.-based payer sector, the ongoing bull market in life sciences IT investment, and DXC’s acquisition of Molina Medicaid Solutions to launch a period of renewed HITS revenue growth. The report also includes scenarios on DXC’s acquisitions and the company’s activities in the Middle East.

Friday:

  • In our mid-November initial report on Cisco Services, TBR noted that the company sustained growth in 3Q18 by attaching services to Cisco’s growth initiatives around next-generation solutions. Our full report will explore the drivers behind that growth and include scenarios around streamlining headcount in the Customer Experience business, which includes Cisco’s software, subscription and services activities; transforming clients’ IT operations at speed and scale utilizing predictive services powered by artificial intelligence and machine learning; and expanding cloud-related offerings by partnering with Google Cloud, SAP and Amazon Web Services.
  • With SAIC’s earnings release slated for Friday, TBR will be looking to see if the company conformed with our July assessment that SAIC needs to address federal priorities as a low-cost alternative in IT modernization, platform integration and training, as well as expand into underpenetrated areas of the federal market organically and/or through acquisitions.
  • Finally, our semiannual look at NTT DATA’s HITS practice will acknowledge that the 2017 acquisition of Dell Services’ healthcare assets was a major undertaking, but is now complete and has significantly enhanced NTT DATA’s capabilities across multiple healthcare segments. In addition, the report includes scenarios around alliances and virtualization in the healthcare IT space.

Services Weekly Preview: November 26-30, 2018

In this magical time between Thanksgiving and Christmas, despite racing to get as much analysis and as many predictions published before the new year, we’re able to enjoy a slight pause in the usual news cycle and company activity to reflect on 2018 and predict what will be coming in 2019. In two upcoming webinars, we will be looking at many marketwide trends, starting with an assessment of management consulting in the digital transformation age.

 

Here’s what’s coming this week:

Thursday: Last quarter when we looked at DXC Technology, we noted the company’s spike in revenue growth following its formation last year normalized to single-digit growth in 2Q18. The underlying businesses of both legacy CSC and Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s (HPE) Enterprise Services are still experiencing pressures around commoditized legacy services. This quarter TBR will highlight and discuss DXC’s recent M&A activity and its resource management strategy, anticipating similar growth results and performance.

Monday: In our full report on T-Systems for this quarter, we will note that strict execution of efforts to become an efficient organization will sustain the company’s slightly improved performance. New offerings in cloud shift T-Systems’ portfolio away from traditional IT services and increase its opportunities in a segment with growth potential.

Services Weekly Preview: November 19-21

Before we celebrate Thanksgiving on Thursday and recover from all that food on Friday, we will publish some of our periodic analysis of IT services vendors, management consulting profiles, and special reports. Here’s what’s coming:

Monday: TBR’s 3Q18 Booz Allen Hamilton full report will provide analysis on one of the federal market’s most forward-thinking and risk-taking services providers. While peers struggle to cultivate a relevant data science workforce, BAH aims to cement its advantage by leading the charge around data science standardization. Its fast-mover advantage enables BAH to set the rules and challenges competitors to fall in line. Such efforts support scalability of more mature capabilities while BAH continues to evolve by exploring new business models, investing in IP and delving into emerging technologies such as blockchain, artificial intelligence and directed energy.

Wednesday:

  • TBR’s 3Q18 CACI full report examines how a traditional defense-led federal services contractor is adjusting to the incursion of commercial IT best practices into its core market areas. The report analyzes how these market disruptors can work to the advantage of a company like CACI, which is investing in software-defined open architecture systems in high-end defense technologies, such as electronic warfare and signals intelligence, to disrupt traditional military suppliers rooted in old procurement models focused on hardware-defined, proprietary and bespoke solutions.
  • In June we described BCG in our Management Consulting Benchmark as the best-positioned for acceleration among immediate peers, including McKinsey and Bain. Our new profile on the firm furthers that assessment, with a caveat the firm will need to retain talent, especially in emerging technology areas, to remain competitive, particularly with Big Four firms like PwC and EY.
  • Last week in Dallas we heard directly from Atos and the new Atos-Syntel leadership about the strategy and expectations for this multibillion-dollar, North America-centric acquisition. Our special report will detail why we think Atos’ renewed approach to the U.S. market will have a substantial impact on the company’s performance in the near term.

Services Weekly Preview: Nov. 11-16, 2018

As we build toward the middle of the quarter, we’re wrapping up our periodic assessments of IT services vendors. Like last week, we also have some semiannual analysis on vendors in the management consulting space.

Monday: 

  • KPMG’s risk-averse culture pressured its performance, causing the firm to drop a spot in terms of revenue size among peers in the latest assessment of the management consulting practice. A potential KPMG and Bain marriage, however, could be a way for the firm to catch up with rivals and disrupt the management consulting space.
  • Continued expansion of its onshore presence, including the recent build-out of its co-innovation center in London, improves HCLT’s value proposition by enabling it to work alongside its clients to create larger-scale transformation engagements. However, HCLT faces some challenges in recruiting talent to support new centers, spurring the implementation of employee development programs.

Tuesday: Although Atos will grow revenues at a slower rate in 2018, the expansion of the company’s Digital Transformation Factory portfolio and recently announced acquisition of SIX Payment Services, which is expected to close in 4Q18, will enable the company to accelerate revenue growth in 2019. TBR’s 3Q18 Atos report analyzes the implications from Atos’ ongoing activities, such as the Syntel acquisition and investments artificial intelligence (AI) and security solutions and capabilities.

Wednesday:

  • Senior Analyst Jen Hamel examines EY’s strategy to provide clients with technological enablement of business transformation in her profile on the firm for our Fall 2018 Management Consulting Benchmark. One key takeaway: Increasing its investment in technology-enabled services, including those involving blockchain and AI, by $1 billion over the next two years will improve EY’s competitiveness with solutions-led peers IBM and Accenture.

  • TBR’s 3Q18 Leidos full report examines the company’s first quarter of year-to-year organic revenue growth since it acquired Lockheed Martin’s IT services business in 2016. The report explains Leidos’ positioning across defense, health and civilian markets and how the company is adjusting to disruption amid the federal market’s shift from bespoke proprietary technology development to configurable commercial-off-the-shelf IT solutions.
  • In our 3Q18 results on Wednesday, TBR expects Cisco Services to continue to accelerate revenue growth during the rest of 2018 and in 2019, positively affected by Cisco’s ongoing portfolio investments in and acquisitions around next-generation and software-driven solutions that generate professional services opportunities. TBR expects Cisco’s recent acquisitions and partnerships in cloud, security and networking to generate increased professional and technical support services for Cisco Services during the coming quarters.
