The power of partnerships: Lessons learned from the VCE family tree

As we reviewed TBR’s Hyperconverged Platforms Customer Research, we caught something that got the wheels turning in our heads about the power of partnerships among tech giants, particularly the persistence of that power long after the alliances have dissolved. The three former participants in the VCE alliance — VMware (NYSE: VMW), Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO) and EMC (now Dell Technologies) — dominate the install base of the survey sample of 200 enterprises with more than 1,000 employees.

The three VCE alliance participants own 74% of the recent purchases within the enterprises sampled. On its face, the dominance could be attributed to the early lead the VCE partners had in the market based on the intellectual property and best practices they learned from one another before sunsetting the relationship.
